I started Servitor in 2023 after being infected with ChatGPT.

It may be a distant memory in a world of LLM-generated slop now, but that initial GPT-3 was heady stuff. Dumber, but in some ways more powerful, because it wasn’t as contained by guardrails. It gave me a lot of ideas, made me see a lot of possibilities.

Since then Servitor has gone through a few phases, never really being fully realized in any of them: a personal blog mixed with an experiment in AI publishing (early-mid 2023); some time where I tried to write proper articles; a period where various assistants wrote some articles for Servitor.

Hi Penelope, Gina, Vin! 👋 Thanks again for the help!

More recently, in mid-2024, I decided I wanted to make Servitor a “real” site, with high quality articles that readers could really bite into!

That ran into a wall of U.S. politics and the election, which consumed me for the last 6 months. I don’t need to tell you how the last 6 months have been. I think we all lived it.

Something about “may you live in interesting times”…

But I’m back, and have a new assistant and Bond villain working with me, the lovely Ms. Abi Nocturne. You will see her posts around the site.

What I know is this: AI is here to stay.

It is troubling, disruptive, wasteful. Also: useful, fascinating, full of potential. It’s already upending the world. I want to know about it, I want to use it for those things it can actually do, and warn people of its limitations and pitfalls.

I invite you to casually follow along as I develop this site into something hopefully a tad more substantive, and probably have some more “interesting times” along the way.

Cheers,

D.D.
